SHADOW GLEN GOLF CLUB — While society was still riding the tail-end of the 2020 Covid-19 Pandemic, and people were a bit more glued to their phones, still indoors and consuming large amounts of social media (this is the time when tiktok was making headlines), and viral content was coming in almost on the daily, the GoodGood guys were out there just creating golf content and growing their brand. I personally had never heard of them before I saw social media content about the shot in question. And you can clearly tell that they had not hit it big yet, as Steve still looks like a twig in this video (almost unrecognizable to the 2022/2023 Steve).
In the video, you can clearly see that these guys are golf studs, bombers of the golf ball, some much more skilled golfers than others, and in the first hole, Team Stumps actually rode on Micah’s shots for a change! Those were definitely different times back then.
As a result of the cinematography planned for this video shoot, where many cameras were being used and videographers were positioned at the tee boxes, fairways, and greens, respectively ahead of where the guys were hitting golf balls from, they were able to capture so many different shots of the golf going in the hole on that Par 4. I can tell you that when I saw this on social media, and I saw so many camera angles, I thought it was faked and/or done with CGI. I am sure other golf fans around the world wondered the same thing.
But what the camera angles meant is that these guys were decidedly making strides to generate great golf content for YouTube. Their vision was innovative and ahead of the times we were living. It wasn’t a little tripod with a phone anymore. These were film productions being made on golf courses!
That, in itself, and as a result of the amazing shot by Matt, was what made YouTube Golf explode and gave way to so many other channels that today have hundreds of thousands of followers and are bound to be in the millions in years to come. I dare to say that they all owe much of the hype and ability to capitalize, to Matt.
Matt Scharff (@mattscharff) is, essentially, the very catalyst that propelled this industry to a much higher level. The guy is blessed with skill and talent, and while not the best golfer in his group, he is absolutely very consistent and has a reach that allows him to land crazy Hole in Ones on Par 4’s, of which he has, to this date (Dec-2023), had three (3)! Yes, while we can’t get one on a short Par-3, Matt has 3 on three different Par 4s! He is incredible and seems to be envied by his GoodGood mates (GM Golf at the top).
